The Diocesan Library’s collection of incunabula originates primarily from secularized monastic libraries, as well as from estates, testamentary bequests, and acquisitions. The collection is particularly rich in incunabula from the convent library of the Crutched Friars (Kreuzherren) at Hohenbusch and from the library of the Carmelites in Aachen. The collection’s thematic focus lies on Cologne and the surrounding region, as well as the history of printing in Cologne. In addition to Cologne, other major printing centers of the era—such as Strasbourg, Venice, Paris, and Basel—are also represented. The Diocesan Library currently holds 430 incunabula (as of December 2, 2020).

Incunabula selected for digitization usually possess unique value, making broader public access highly beneficial.
