Many pages partly torn or excised (minor loss to text, modern mending), first folia badly damaged.

[1], i8-1 (lacks one at front), ii8, iii10-2 (lacks original 1st and 5th, stub of last is wrapped back around quire ii, appearing between ff. 7-8), iv4, v8-1 (lacks original 1st, stub of last is wrapped back aroung quire iv, appearing between ff. 33-34), vi-xi8, xii6, xiii-xviii8, xix8-1+1 (original 6th leaf lost, present 6th is smaller single leaf [142] with text supplied in 12c hand; 5th leaf [141] also has lower inside corner torn out, with loss to text), xx-xxiv8 (paper pasted to entire verso of last leaf to stabilize damage [145v]), [1]. No quire signatures.Quires i, ii, and iii-iv are separate units of production, but seem to be intended to be parts of same book, with the possible exception of quire i (Officia per ferias), which is in a darker ink by a different scribe, but has the same type of orange-red ink for rubrication.

Written space: 300 mm x 213 mm ( 105 mm for inner column (text), outer column 87 mm (commentary), 21 mm between columns), except ff. 8-15 (calendar, quire ii), which is ruled as 300 mm x 220 mm Lines per page: quire i: 27; quire ii: 27 ruled, 25 written (calendar); quires iii-iv: 25 ruled, but on ff. 16ra-17vb only 23 are written (prefaces); quire v to end of codex: 23 lines for Psalm text in inner column; for gloss, 3-5 lines above and 6 lines below text ruled as long lines, plus 36-37 lines in outer column. 2 columns, except calendar ff. 8r-15v (see ruling below). Dry-point ruling, double bounding lines, with three lines between columns, except for calendar ff. 8r-15v (quire ii), which has 3 sets of 3 bounding lines, i.e. at left, center, and right side of each leaf prickings at outer bounding line, except near center of page (approximately at inner bounding line of outer column) in quire ii (ff. 8-15), and in both these locations in quires i and iii-iv (ff. 1-7, 16-27). text above top line

Buchschmuck

  • 10- to 14-line decorated initials (pen-drawn interlace in red);
  • 2- to 5-line initials and minor initials rubricated;
  • tituli in red uncials with square-capital A;
  • first phrases usually in rustic capitals (or mixed majuscules);
  • gloss on titulus in red minuscules;
  • rubrication in quires i-iv in minuscules and rustic capitals, except in square capitals and uncials filled with purple and green f. 1r.

Hinzufügungen

Occasional marginalia; two added passages with neums; a few small pen sketches of animal and human heads (added later); formal gloss on Psalter (for arrangement, see ruling above).

Geschichte der Handschrift

Provenienz
Calendar and Litany show the ms. to be for the use of Cologne (see Plotzek, op. cit.). A. von Euw (Ornamenta Ecclesiae 1, p. 437) would have the origin of this ms. be St. Gall, with the exception of the Litany (ff. 182v-184r) which he says could have been written at Köln; Hoffmann (loc. cit.) places the origin of the whole ms. at Köln, between the years 993-996. R. Kottje, loc. cit., also argues for the origin at Köln, citing similarities of the script to that of Köln, Dombibl. Mss. 53 and 143 (written at Köln, late 10c), as well as the "weitgehende Übereinstimmung" between the script of the main part of the ms. and that of the litany. Otto III is referred to on f. 184r as King Otto, thus the date must be before his crowning as emperor in 996 (Hoffmann loc. cit. and Kottje p. 161 note 37). The entry of St. Ulrich , in the Calendar by the main scribe (f. 11v), gives the ms. its terminus post quem: Ulrich, bishop of Augsburg, died in 973 , was venerated soon after as a saint, and was officially recognized by Pope John XV in 993 (Hoffmann and Kottje, locc. citt.). Hence the postulation by Kottje (p. 160), that the ms. was copied in Köln from an examplar of Southern Germany.
