Quires i-xiii (ff. 1-94) were apparently produced separately but in same format and at the same center as quires xiv-xxiv (95-180), virtually contemporaneously; see quire signatures and hands. Folia at front and end of codex damaged from mold at lower margin, many with modern mending.

[1], i4, ii2 (quires i + ii perhaps originally joined as first quire of 6 leaves), iii-xxiii8, xxiv6, [1]. Quire signatures II-XII (iii-xiii), I-VIII (xiv-xxi) (VIII corr. ex VIIII), and X (xxii); last leaf of xxiii [174] badly damaged in lower margin, no signature visible.

Written space: 250 mm x 1720 mm ( 70 mm each column, 32 mm betwen columns). 27-29 lines. 2 columns. Dry-point ruling, double bounding lines for each column prickings at outer bounding line. text above top line

littera carolina.Name written sideways in left margin f. 134v, perhaps name of scribe: "Gunthel".

One main hand ff. 3va-94vb

one or more similar main hands ff. 96rb-180vb, plus secondary hands.

At least one relieving hand in first section (f. 72rb) also writes first pages of second section ( 95ra-96ra).

Buchschmuck

  • Simple 1- to 4-line initials, red or black;
  • tituli in red uncials, except f. 1va-4rb in mixed majuscules (alternate lines red and black), square capitals ff. 169v and 180v;
  • some first lines in mixed majuscules.

Ewald and Hartmann (MGH Epist. 2 , p. xiv) considered this codex "ex codicibus Gregorianis forte praestantissimus". Listed in catalogue of 833.
