The city of Cologne and the Rhineland have played significant roles throughout a turbulent history spanning every era. The origins of Cologne date back to the Roman colony of "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium," and Christianity arrived in the city under Emperor Constantine the Great. A fully established episcopal community existed in Cologne by the beginning of the 4th century at the latest, and the first record of a bishop — Maternus — dates to the year 313. The term "Rhineland" generally refers to areas along the Rhine that are not precisely defined. The current organization into individual collections is dynamic and subject to change as new material is added. Please note that there may be overlaps between collections, as individual works can be assigned to multiple collections. |
